University Student From Mexico Invented A Self-Regenerating Pavement Made Out Of Rubber When Exposed To Rain

A university student in Mexico has received a lot of praise after he invented a new rubber pavement from recycled tires that – get this – regenerates itself every time it rains! 

Civil engineering student studying at the Autonomous University of Coahuila located in Torreón, Mexico, Israel Antonio Briseño Carmona has invented a self-regenerating pavement in order to tackle to huge problem of destroyed pavements and numerous potholes in cities all across Mexico because of regular rainfall.

His innovative creation could be the solution to saving billions of dollars being spent on infrastructure costs by governments and construction companies, not only in Mexico, but all over the world.

This invention has won Briseño the 2019 James Dyson Award in Mexico. 

“What happens is that when it rains, water filters down to the subbase [of the pavement], creating a fault, and when cars pass over it, it collapses. That’s why I wanted to turn the main material that deteriorates into one that can recover. This project [can allow] water to instead be a source of maintenance for our roads,” he told Expansión, a Mexican news portal. 

This genius got the idea from his experiment last year where he used an asphalt formula before he went on to testing recycled rubber taken from tires. This material will make roadworks cheaper and more sustainable. 

Briseño patented his invention as Paflec in April earlier this year. 

As seen in the James Dyson Award website, the rainwater allows the rubber with it’s additives to turn into a putty-like substance when the water comes into contact with it, allowing the “regeneration and physical-chemical improvement of the pavement.”  

Briseño’s hope is to partner up with construction companies to use his product, while he gets 5% royalties on the amounted total cost, yet as of today – he has not formed any alliances with said companies yet.

The university student devised a three-step plan that will turn his money making concept into a reality: 

First, he must meet an engineer that could help him solve the other minute problems of the product, while building a small portion of the road for testing, to ensure that everything works out perfectly. Second, Briseno needs to seek a certification for the new system from the national construction standardisation organization (ONNCCE), so they can approve the formula needed in Mexico. Third, the inventor will need to seek approval from the authorities so he can complete contract signing for the use of the self-generating pavement. 

“At present there are already pavement types that can regenerate, but none use water as a means of regeneration [nor are they] made of tires,” said Briseño.

In Mexico, the pavements are made of 80% asphalt and 20% hydraulic cement, which are poor materials when it comes to the importance of road infrastructure in society.
