In Washington DC, there is an entrepreneurial teen, who owns and runs his own bakery business. 13 year-old Michael Platt is the owner of Michael’s Desserts. When he turned 11, he converted his passion for baking into a business. He always loved baking, even as a child.
However, this not just an ordinary bakery business. It operates on a one-for-one donation model…for every cupcake sold he donates one to the homeless. Michael’s Desserts partnered with No Kid Hungry, a non-profit organization that provides meals, educational programming, and advocates on behalf of children. He makes donation batches around once a month, he mentioned.
“I knew that I wanted to make a business, but I knew I didn’t just want to make money, I also wanted to help people at the same time,” he was quoted as saying. The past 2 years have seen his business grow. His baked goods include cookies and cupcakes, and cupcakes are his biggest seller – a four-pack sells for $15. He told the Washington Post in a month he sells 12 cookies, 75 cupcakes, and 12 rotating “chef’s choice” products which he termed as “freedom fighter cupcakes.” These “chef’s choice” items draw inspiration from historical “freedom fighters” such as Harriet Tubman and Martin Luther King, Jr., who was the inspiration for the business, the Washington Post reported.
Michael is home-schooled and is helped and supported by his mom, whom he calls his “baking consultant.” He says he is grateful for all the support, and orders that people have placed…mostly by strangers.
“ I always wanted to have a purpose for what I do,” he told the Washington Post. In addition, he says “It’s all about helping people – not just having a purpose for yourself, but thinking about, how does this touch other things?”
Michael believes his cupcakes inspire smiles, tears, amazement, joy, satisfaction, happiness and other human emotions to those in the streets he has given…all this from a 13-year old. Many thanks Michael.
