A girl scout cadette of Troop 1967 in Irvine was recently awarded the Girl Scout Medal of Honor at a ceremony held in Disneyland Hotel, Anaheim. The award was given because 14-year-old Ava Kopecky, who saved a life of a two-and-a-half year old boy she had never met before the incident.

The toddler suddenly fell in the water at Woodbridge North Lake in Irvine, California which was luckily near the area where Ava and her friends were playing that day.

Ava, who wouldn’t call herself a strong swimmer used her quick thinking and got into action right away by getting a large stick and entering the water to get closer to the toddler so he could grab onto the other end of the stick, which saved him from drowning. She was able to successfully pull the boy out and eventually reunited him with his mother who was close by.

At the Girl Scouts Recognition event in Disneyland, Vicki Shepp who is the CEO of the Girl Scout of Orange County was representing the Girl Scouts of the USA to award the medal of honor to Ava. Shepp shared that “Girl Scouts are prepared to do heroic things. We are very proud of Ava’s exemplary actions, which reflected the Girl Scout Promise to help people at all times.”

Congratulations, Ava!
