In April 2007, authorities launched a sting-operation on a 15-acre property in Surry County, Virginia. The property, owned by Star NFL Quarterback Michael Vick, contained dozens of pit bulls which were found in horrible conditions, most of them neglected. Evidence of illegal dog fighting activities were also found, leading to the arrest and charging of Vick in July for engaging in competitive enterprise across state lines. The incident caused outrage among animal-rights organizations and prevented Vick from cashing-in on his endorsement deals. Vick served one year in prison at Leavenworth, Kansas and after his release in 2009, struck a 2-year contract and successful comeback the Philadelphia Eagles.
