The idea of living more healthily is a tricky one for many people. Some manage to get started and keep it going — becoming fitter, happier, and enjoying life more in the process. For others though, it’s still hard to begin a healthy regime, even though they know it’s something that will help them live longer. We can become so accustomed to living one way that it can feel almost impossible to change things and become healthier.
In the long term, though, making these changes is the best thing to do. You can start small and work up to the bigger things and this will help you take that all-important first step. Here are some great ways you can begin to live more healthily.
What are You Doing Now?
Before you can make any changes at all, you need to know what should be changed. You can’t just stop doing one thing in exchange for another without knowing that what you’re switching to is a good idea or not. Therefore, you need to take stock of everything you are doing and work out whether it’s something that needs to change.
Look at your average week and this will help you make this list. You could look at what you’re eating, what you’re drinking (including alcohol), how much exercise you’re doing, and even how you’re feeling after eating certain foods, for example. Once everything is noted down, you’ll easily see what might be doing you harm. Then you can examine each of these issues one by one and make necessary changes.
Reward Yourself
Because these life changes can be so difficult to start, it’s important to reward yourself once you have achieved what you set out to do. This can be anything that is going to spur you on and keep you focused. If you’re trying to quit smoking, then you could get any tobacco stains on your teeth hidden with veneers when you finally give up. If you’re trying to lose weight, then you could buy new clothes in a smaller size once you reach a certain target. The list goes on.
Whatever the reward is, it shouldn’t undo any good work you’ve done, but it should be something you can look forward to and that will help you to achieve more.
Prioritize
If you find there are a lot of things in your life that need to be changed, it can be overwhelming when you look at them all at once. It’s far better, and much more effective, to take each thing one at a time.
For example, if you want to quit smoking and you feel it is your biggest priority, then that is what you need to focus on. Everything else can wait. The same goes for drinking, eating takeout, or not exercising enough. If you try to work on everything at once, you are more likely to go back to old ways and habits because you’re making things much harder for yourself than they need to be.
