While he cares mostly about these poor animals, Owen also wants to help because of his connection with Australia. His father Simon was raised in Sydney, while Owen himself also lived in Australia for some time when he was a baby.

“He has a pull to Australia. He’s very proud of the fact that he lived there. I don’t think he remembers any of it but he’s proud of it,” said Colley.

Recently, Owen has been talking about missing Australia and wanting to return. His mom also mentioned that he was sad that she told him now isn’t a good time to pay a visit because of the state of the country.

Because Owen enjoys creating things out of clay, making these special koalas for a good cause made perfect sense, shared his mother. While his mom sketched out a koala, they created the design for the clay creature together.

While it takes about 3 or 4 minutes to create each koala, they need to be baked in the oven for about 17 minutes. After making 55 koalas, Owen ran out of clay and they’re waiting for more to get shipped in.

“We’re seeing all of the donations coming in and we’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, we don’t have the clay,” Colley said. ‘We have every intention to fulfill every koala, it just won’t happen by tomorrow. It’s a 6-year-old using his little hands to make the spaces and the ears, so it does take time.” Each donation goes from $5 to $150, said Owen’s mother.

Colley hopes that other parents can also help their kids find ways to help those affected by the wildfires.

“Anyone can make a difference and when we come together we can make an even bigger difference. I just I love the idea that maybe other kids can take this to their communities and sell little clay koalas locally and raise money for this great cause,” said Colley.
