It’s not likely you heard about this from mainstream media news sources, but in April 2016, protests began in the Republic of Macedonia against President Gjorgje Ivanov and the government led by the interim Prime Minister Emil Dimitriev. Reportedly, an infuriated populace began participating in demonstrations after President Gjorgje decided to stop the investigation against former Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski and a hoard of politicians involved in a wiretapping scandal.
Not only did the European Union and the United States criticize the government of Macedonia for pardoning politicians, thousands took to the streets to make a statement about the corruption. One of the more well-known demonstrations involved activists recoloring the city. Writes photojournalist Frédéric Séguin:
“The protesters recolored the city with paint in the street and used inventive ways to redecorate all the new and misplaced buildings financed with dirty money; colors. This peaceful movement joined by all generations was beautiful in every aspect.”
The activist and artist shared the photos with Bored Panda, and they certainly are incredible to review:
If citizens in Macedonia and Iceland can stand up against corruption and inspire change, it might be argued that citizens in America can, as well.
