YouTuber Markiplier has over six million subscribers and was recently invited to the White House along with other prominent vloggers to talk about his influence on the new generation. Mark (who describes himself as a “doofy, pantsless gamer from nowhere”) was pissed about the tone of the meeting, which inferred that video bloggers like himself are in a privileged position of power- able to manipulate public opinion and encourage viewers what to think and what to do.
The meeting inspired Mark to make a passionate speech to his subscribers, and indeed all of us. Rejecting the idea that he has either the right or the ability to influence a generation, Mark chose to empower viewers by telling them to follow their dreams and hold on to the hope that one day, things will change.
“You guys have so much more power than you think,” he says. “You don’t need to be spoon-fed bullshit by someone like me to tell you which direction you should go. I know what this community can do, what six million people can do. Someday you guys won’t need someone like me to represent you. Someday you guys will have your voices heard. And everyone, every single person, will be able to make their mark on the world.”
A testament to Mark’s online popularity, this video was posted today and already has over 41,000 likes at the time of writing.
