Ali Paepke, the Manager for the Life-Saving Program at Best Friends Pet Resource Center, faced a daunting challenge when a dog named Neo arrived at her rehabilitation center.
Neo, a white pooch with black spots, had spent over 450 days in a shelter, and was sadly part of an ongoing animal abuse trial. This made the adorable yet problematic doggie difficult to rehabilitate into a better domestic life.
One of the mottos on the website says, ‘Our animal companions are an integral part of our family, and the new pet resource center was designed with that in mind. It’s a place for the entire community to connect with pets — a place to adopt your next dog or cat, explore resources for guidance or support with current pets, or simply to gather with and enjoy family and friends.’
However, when the manager of the Life-Saving Program called Best Friends Pet Resource Center, saw the adorable dog, she was “blown away.”
“To meet a dog who had been through all of that who just immediately trusted you and immediately wanted attention from you was just mind-blowing… Neo was that one that I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, we’re making a difference,’” said Paepke.
Sadly, Neo was a poor victim of severe animal abuse. Thankfully, it wasn’t long after his arrival at Best Friends’ center in Central Arkansas that he would soon find his forever home.
For new foster mom Linda Songbird, it took her one day to decide that Neo was going to be the perfect fit for her for a lifetime of companionship.
According to Songbird, “It makes your life worthwhile. And he’s wonderful. He’s there as soon as you come in. He’s right at the door. Happy to see you!”
One can only hope that other dogs stuck in unfortunate situations just like Neo’s will be able to find their very own happiness one day.
