Although there isn’t much information that gets leaked out of North Korea without them usually divulging it, what is known is that they have a large army of around 1.19 million people. It is mandatory for all who live in North Korea to serve under the military for 10 years, the longest for any single country who has mandatory military service. One such soldier, Jang Se-yel, a citizen who served 12 years before defecting to South Korea shared, “The North has yet to officially announce its policy to extend the term, but I have heard that the ruling party has been encouraging soldiers to volunteer to serve one or more years beyond their service period.” This just means more people in their military.

Although, again it is said that North Korea’s Navy does not rival that of the United States, the fact that they have mini-submarines, as well as a fleet of bigger ones, still poses a threat to the rest of the world. According to the group, FerryBridge Group Naval Consultancy, despite the number of ships and submarines they have in their possession, “They are a manageable threat.”
