Australian Endangered Species Conservationists Celebrate As 29 Animals Removed From The List

In an incredible feat, Australia has managed to recover at least 29 different animals after undergoing a rather large-scale research project study where they were able to officially remove them from the endangered species list.

This list, also known as Australia’s Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act has at least 446 species of different animals that require immediate care and protection at the moment, however now, at least 29 species are now no longer on that list. According to the report, these include 15 mammals, 8 birds, 4 frogs, a reptile and a fish.

Some of these critters are the ‘golden, Western barred, and Eastern barred bandicoots, Western quoll, sooty albatross, waterfall frog, Flinder’s Range worm-lizard, yellow-footed rock wallabies, greater bilby, humpback whale, growling grass frog, Murray’s cod,’ and more.

For decades, Australia has prioritized and put focus on endangered species conservation since so many of their animal varieties and species cannot be found anywhere else in the world. And since other invasive predators, such as foxes and cane toads, were introduced to the country and lived there for decades, have proven to be incredibly disruptive to the local Australian wildlife, like that of the bilbies and bandicoots.

One main difference between the American Endangered Species’ List (ESL) and the EPBC is that the Australian organization doesn’t require that whatever species that’s in review needs to be checked or investigated regularly. That’s also why these rather big scientific papers are considered quite rare, and these momentous occasions deserve to be celebrated by the country’s conservationists.

Their paper happened to be published in the Science journal, which was conducted by a number of Australian academic institutions. It was determined that conservation managers should focus on measuring their success partially through documenting their recoveries based on the following characteristics: stability, ranges, and populations of the current day,’ despite the fact that the new numbers of the species represent a much smaller fraction as compared to what they were before Australia was colonized.

The hope is that these measures will help ‘coordinate conservation efforts’ while also getting funding for other animals whose populations are seemingly decreasing as well. Moreover, it may also help address any possible threats to other animal species in the future.
