The crew on the Maiken, a yacht traveling in the South Pacific after performing checking out procedures, first encountered what they described as “brown, somewhat grainy streaks in the water” as they moved through the ocean.

But as they moved forward, the streaks became clumps and were more frequently spotted in the vast body of water.
