FBI Director James Comey told Congress on Friday that the bureau intends to investigate new emails that they were made aware of to determine if there is any classified information in them. In the letter Comey penned to the chairmen, he said,
“In connection with an unrelated case, the FBI has learned of the existence of emails that appear pertinent to the investigation. I am writing to inform you that the investigative team briefed me on this yesterday, and I agreed that the FBI should take appropriate investigative steps designed to allow investigators to review these emails to determine whether they contain classified information, as well as to assess their importance to our investigation.”
To be clear, the FBI isn’t exactly reopening the investigation, although Comey did announce that the case had been closed in September after it was decided that Clinton would not face criminal charges. The bureau uncovered new information while looking through Anthony Weiner’s electronic devices to see if he was sending illicit text messages to a 15-year-old girl in North Carolina.
Exactly what the content of the emails is has not been determined, but the Clinton campaign has asked Comey to provide more specific information. John Podesta, Chairman of Clinton’s campaign, attempted to make a vague and non-committal statement about the issue:
“Director Comey’s letter refers to emails that have come to light in an unrelated case, but we have no idea what those emails are and the director himself notes they may not even be significant.”
Whether the emails will turn out to be significant or lead to another dismissal remains to be seen, but the timing on this news could not be worse for Clinton. With just 11 days to go before the election, re-injecting the email scandal into the news is horrible coverage for the candidate that’s favored to win. Trump has already taken advantage of the news and has relayed it to supporters at his rally in New Hampshire on Friday and Republicans everywhere are seizing the opportunity to remind people that Hillary belongs in prison. Chairman Reince Priebus of the RNC said,
“The F.B.I.’s decision to reopen their criminal investigation into Hillary Clinton’s secret email server just 11 days before the election shows how serious this discovery must be.”
