Butler University in Indianapolis has introduced a groundbreaking initiative: a two-year, tuition-free college program designed to provide aspiring first-generation scholars with the opportunity to attain an associate’s degree and gain access to higher education. This innovative approach aims to eliminate the financial burden often associated with pursuing a college education, particularly for those who are the first in their families to embark on such a journey.

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates have the option to seamlessly transition to pursuing a bachelor’s degree at a fixed cost of $10,000. This represents a significant reduction, as it is only a quarter of the typical tuition fee, which currently stands at $45,000. This initiative not only facilitates the initial steps into higher education but also ensures that the subsequent pursuit of an advanced degree remains affordable and accessible, breaking down barriers that may impede the academic aspirations of deserving individuals.

“We were founded in 1855 by an abolitionist,” President James Danko said when he spoke to CNN. “We were not living out our founder’s dream… that set in motion a lot of conversation and discussion about how you would deliver a degree? What would the type of student look like?”

Butler University, located in Indiana, is set to launch new college programs with a focus on accessibility for students in low-income housing areas and those aiming to become the first in their family to attend college. The funding for these initiatives will be sourced from endowments and donations.

The guidance for this endeavor comes from the Come to Believe Network, an organization specializing in the development of cost-effective degree programs for 4-year universities. Notably, this network has successfully collaborated with institutions such as Loyola University in Chicago and the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis to establish similar programs.

Butler University President Danko announced that the institution plans to commence enrollment for the affordable associate’s program in the coming year at their Midtown Indianapolis campus, with classes scheduled to begin in the fall semester of 2025. This strategic move aligns with the university’s commitment to broadening educational opportunities and making higher education more accessible.

“The ‘Come to Believe’ model is not only innovative in its approach, but it also has proven outcomes, resonating deeply with Butler’s original mission,” Danko said in a statement he recently made.

Students can will be able to choose pursuing associate’s degrees in either Business or Allied Health.
