California Start-Up Earned 1M Selling Stored Renewable Energy Made From Old EV Batteries

In another move to work towards sustainability, a California start-up company has taken thousands of old and used vehicle battery packs from landfills and converted them into an energy storage facility.

The company, B2U Storage Solutions, managed to earn a million dollars last year from selling stored renewable energy to the California state grid, all thanks to the 1,300 used battery packs they recovered from old Toyota and Honda electric vehicles (EVs).

While these batteries have worn out from powering these vehicles over the years, they can still be used to store excess solar and wind energy for times when there’s no sun or wind. That way, they can provide much needed electricity at times when there is none.

Throughout the next ten years, there will be millions of battery parks that will require dismantling and recycling, or possibly, they can find a second life at a facility just like B2U so that they don’t have to end up in landfills, useless and polluting the planet.

According to the San Diego Times, these grid storage companies are in huge demand, not just in states like California, but in others as well, where they can become the next destination for these types of battery packs, while potentially lowering the storage costs by at least 40%.

As for B2U’s Sierra facility, they share that it ‘has 25 megawatts of storage capacity capable of fitting any EV into their system.’ Their hope is to use Japanese investment capital in order to expand their operations further in California and Texas.
