China and The US Exploring A New Reality Of Warfare: The Genetically Altered Super Soldiers

Time Magazine

Really? Sounds so absurd and disturbing, but it is not impossible. China has been known to do shocking and unregulated things, so the idea of “super soldiers” genetically enhanced is not surprising. And definitely, the US will not allow them to get a step ahead, especially when it comes to warfare.

A recent article by The Sun highlighted a defense think tank’s opinion on China possibly developing “terminator” type super soldiers. Rusi, the think tank, also mentioned that the US is also delving into the same research as China, that seems plausible, as the US won’t allow China to overtake them in military prowess. “The threat is obvious and real. Chinese money could be stealing a march on western armed forces and that is deeply concerning,” Professor John Louth of Rusi told The Sun.

Professor Louth continued, “GM technology is proven with plants, it could absolutely be applied to the person. In China, it is reasonable to assume that they are enhancing their battlefield soldiers on all these fronts.”

It seems the Chinese are willing to do anything to stay a step ahead of the West, particularly their favorite nemesis, America. The Chinese People Liberation Army is sponsoring research into gene editing and human performance enhancement. Since 2017 (and probably secretly even further back), China’s national strategy of military-civil fusion biology has been a priority. They lead the world in the number of trials using CRISPR, a gene-editing technology in humans. Several clinical trials have been undertaken editing human genes. The foundation for Chinese research on biotechnology may even go further back then 2015.

“Chinese military scientists and strategists have consistently emphasized that biotechnology could become a “new strategic commanding heights of the future Revolution in Military Affairs,” wrote the James Town Foundation. They continue, “Notably, Major General He Fuchu, former president of the Academy of Military Medical Sciences (AMMS) and now vice president of the Academy of Military Sciences, has long been a prominent proponent of the militarization of biotechnology. He has anticipated that ‘modern biotechnology and its integration with information, nanotechnology, and the cognitive, etc. domains will have revolutionary influences upon weapons and equipment, the combat spaces, the forms of warfare, and military theories.”

Well truth be told, the US has not been idly doing nothing, “Captain America” is after all, American. The Pentagon and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which is a part of the Department of Defense (DOD), has also expressed an interest in the science of “super soldiers.” Efforts are clearly underway by programs on Canine Research, Biomedical, and Human Performance. The United States Special Operations Command announced in 2018 that its BHPCR would be funded with at least $15 million for research to create “super soldiers.” These may mean soldiers with “enhanced physiological performance” that requires a fraction of normal sleep, as well as other abilities optimizing human performance.

Another development is the study of using telepathy so a pilot can control up to 250 drones through a brain-computer interface (BCI) , or to be rapidly “healed”  on the battlefield through tissue regeneration and neuro-tech. DARPA also wants gene-editing to enhance defenses against biologically engineered threats before they are unleashed, according to Steven Walker, DARPA’s director, during a meeting at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). Included would be proactively editing the DNA of troops to produce several antibodies, and to block biochemically hostile attempts to edit their DNA. Simply said, these super soldiers will be equipped to take on any biological threat.

Walker stressed, “Our focus is about the protection aspect and the restoration, versus enhancement.” He also said, “ all these technologies, they’re dual use. You can use them for good, you can use them for evil – and DARPA is about using them for good, to protect our warfighters.”

Other options also include using nano-augmentation in combination with high-tech prosthetic implants or utilizing high-tech outer body exo-suits that enable a wearer to have abilities like super strength (from Captain America to Ironman). The Pentagon has seriously shown interest in developing exo-suits, which they dub “Ironman”, and prototypes have been developed. DARPA  has been working on this since 2011, under the Warrior Web Program. But it isn’t the only study on exo-suits being worked on, the Special Operations Command has its own Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit or TALOS.

Wow! It seems a wormhole just opened up and transported us into a video game, or an Avengers movie. Maybe military people from China and the US are watching too many movies. But experts predict that these will all be a reality by 2050, or at the rate interest is going, maybe even earlier. Well only time will tell, let’s hope we know what we are getting into.
