It’s safe to say that a large percentage of Americans – and spectators abroad – are feeling both numb and shocked by the results of yesterday’s election. With many expecting a Clinton win, it’s been difficult for opposers of the business tycoon to wrap their heads around the fact that Donald Trump – the man who’s broken every rule in the handbook – is now America’s Commander-in-Chief.

Among many who likely broke down upon contemplating what a Trump presidency might mean for themselves and others (especially minorities and African-Americans) is Van Jones. During a CNN panel, he congratulated conservative pro-Trump voters on the success in the polls. Then, he said:

“I’m hearing about a nightmare. It’s hard to be a parent for a lot of us. You tell your kids, don’t be a bully. You tell your kids, don’t be a bigot. You tell your kids, do your homework, and be prepared. And then you have this outcome, and people are putting their children to bed tonight, and they’re afraid of breakfast,” Jones said, tearing up. “They’re afraid of, how do I explain this to my children? I have Muslim friends who are texting me tonight, saying, should I leave the country? I have families of immigrants that are terrified tonight.”

According to Huff Post, he then explained that he thinks Trump was victorious because of a “whitelash”. Reportedly, he believes white America was revolting against 8 years of a black president by electing an openly bigoted, sexist, and racist demagogue who bashed people of color and minorities in order to score more political points. He said:

“This was many things… this was a rebellion against the elites, true. This was a complete reinvention of politics and polls, it’s true. It was also something else… This was a whitelash. This was a whitelash against a changing country. It was a whitelash against a black president, in part. And that’s the part where the pain comes. And Donald Trump has a responsibility tonight to come out and reassure people that he is going to be the president of all the people he insulted, and offended, and brushed aside, yeah. When you say you want to take your country back, you got a lot of people who feel they’re not represented well either. But we don’t want to feel that someone has been elected by throwing away some of us to appeal more deeply to others.”
