Dog Waited Faithfully For Over A Month After His Owners Left Him Behind

There have been horror stories of families leaving behind their pets when they move out, but usually they’re left inside the house where real estate agents can find them. For Boo the dog, he was left outside with the trashed furniture and vulnerable to the elements.

His family left their mattress, old trash bins, lampshades, clothes and other assorted items when they moved away, and apparently Boo was just as useless to them as these items.

Thankfully, Boo had a neighbor looking out for him who put out food and water for him regularly while he laid faithfully on the mattress for his family to return. When it became clear that they were long gone, someone made the call to Detroit Youth & Dog Rescue that Boo was in need of help.

That’s when Mike Diesel, the founder of the dog rescue, raced over to be with Boo and help him regain his trust in humans. He told The Dodo that when he arrived,

“He was just laying there, being his loyal self. Pillows were still on the mattress. Being the loyal dog he was supposed to be, he waited for his master to come back.”

If that weren’t heartbreaking enough, Diesel soon realized that Boo still wasn’t ready to leave his home and abandon hope just yet; Diesel needed to work with him to gently convince Boo to come with him.

Diesel spent a full 11 hours with Boo at the scene on that first day, and even brought fried chicken and hamburgers to show him that he was a likable human that meant well. He kept Boo company and acclimated him to the sound of his voice just to prepare him for the coming days.

Boo’s new guardian didn’t leave his side until 2am that night, and he even returned at 10am with a Sausage McMuffin and hash browns from McDonald’s, surely not a healthy diet, but fit for a special occasion (such as a rescue).

After a few more hours, Boo was ready for a collar and leash to be placed on him. Diesel took him on a half hour walk and the two relaxed for an hour afterwards on a blanket. It was then that Boo agreed to be picked up and put in Diesel’s truck to make his way to the vet.

“We kind of talked to each other to make sure we understood each other’s feelings,” Diesel told The Dodo. “He knew I wasn’t going to hurt him.”

Unfortunately, the vet confirmed that Boo was heartworm positive. This means that Boo can’t be too active and must undergo treatment, which the vet started that day, but the disease is not contagious. On the other hand, Boo was found to be really mellow and loving towards others, even dogs.

He is now at the Detroit Youth & Dog Rescue and waiting for either his forever home or even a foster home. If you are able to provide a home for him, he is open to loving and living again. Visit the shelter’s Facebook page to get in touch with them and take a look at their other dogs.
