When immersing oneself in the world of elephants, it is impossible to disregard the sheer enormity and grandeur of these magnificent creatures. Everything from their size to their strength seems to dwarf the world around us and bring attention to their stunning presence. This is especially true when dealing with elephants in need of medical attention or special prosthetics, making even the simplest of tasks seem much larger and extreme than they normally would.

For example, in a recent video showcasing the incredible efforts of dedicated veterinarians, we see an elephant receiving CPR via two individuals jumping up and down onto the animal’s ribs with a force akin to a moon bounce. The sheer spectacle of such a sight is enough to leave anyone awe-struck and amazed at the sheer scale of the situation.

Similarly, we have the story of Chhouk, an 11-year-old Asian elephant residing at the Wildlife Alliance conservation organization in Cambodia. Due to a tragic accident involving a poacher’s snare, Chhouk was forced to come to terms with the loss of his foot, an injury that would have been insurmountable for most animals. However, thanks to the help of the Paradise Wildlife Park in the UK, this magnificent creature has been able to receive a new prosthetic foot made out of recycled car tires and tow truck strapping every six months.

This incredible feat is not only a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of those involved in Chhouk’s care, but it also showcases the boundless potential of this majestic animal. Despite facing such adversity, Chhouk remains as strong-willed as ever, facing each day with resilience and determination to continue living the best possible life.

Overall, when dealing with elephants, it is clear that everything takes on a larger, more extreme scale. However, it is also clear that when we put our hearts and minds into helping these animals, we are capable of creating incredible results that highlight the beauty and resilience of these magnificent creatures.

“The level of care that he gets is brilliant and he has a great life now. There’s no better feeling,” said 27-year-old Cam Whitnall. He’s from England and he runs the Paradise Wildlife Park and Big Cat Sanctuary with his family.

“Because he’s still growing, it needs replacing often and we’ve been sending payments to cover that. They’re made out of recycled rubber and some Velcro to tie it up,” he also said. “They weigh about 20kg (44 pounds) and we actually got them to send one over and it’s sitting in my office currently.”

During his recent visit to Wildlife Alliance in Cambodia, Cam was impressed with the incredible setup created for Chhouk. The caretakers cleverly use a small device to isolate Chhouk’s leg during the prosthetic attachment process. In a video captured by Cam, Chhouk even seems to assist as if he were putting on his own shoe like a human. However, he is nonetheless thanked with a delicious, large coconut at the end.
