In 2016, 30 beached whales were found on the shores of Europe, and one in the Philippines. In most of the mammals, plastic trash was discovered. Distraught by the reality and confused that humans are not waking up, activist organization Greenpeace and activist Dentsu Jayme Syfu collaborated to create a giant “dead whale” that does an impressive job of shocking spectators.
“Dead whale” isn’t really a dead whale. Instead, it is 73 ft. x 10 ft. installation made of plastic waste found in the ocean. Local artists were enlisted to make the whale as realistic as possible, and it was left on the Sea Side Beach Resort of Naic, Cavite, looking as if plastic bags, remains of plastic containers, sachet, bottles and more is falling out of it stomach.
The installation made waves when it was discovered on May 11. And, considering May is the month of the ocean, the project couldn’t have been released at a better time. After the “dead whale” went viral on social media, Greenpeace used the platform to call on leaders of the ASEAN Summit, which is being held in the Phillippines, to take concrete measures against plastic pollution.
Within 24 hours, an online petition gathered 3,000 signatures from 300 media outlets around the world. As Bea Ram writes on Bored Panda, “The dead whale installation is the perfect symbol of our ocean’s impending doom from plastics pollution, predicted to outweigh marine life by 2050.” Learn more.
