Great news has happened for the veterans living in California. As of the 1st of January 2020, they have been exempt from paying any fees to adopt a pet from animal shelters.

Alt 105.3 Radio reported about the Senate Bill 245 that was signed into effect by Governor Gavin Newsom. This law states that all animal shelters within the state waive all pet adoption fees for military veterans.

State Senator Liang Liang Chang who authored the legislation said: “This is a big win for veterans and shelter animals.” Chang’s office came out with a report saying that there are approximately two million veterans residing in California alone – with a number of them coping with PTSD. Having an animal as a companion has proven to be helpful for recovery.

Chang also said:

“As the saying goes, a dog is a ‘man’s best friend.’ When I’m home my four-legged companions are a part of my family. Buster and Pepper bring me joy and laughter and I benefit from the positive effects of their companionship. Our brave heroes deserve the same happiness, and I’m glad we can reduce the barriers for bringing together veterans seeking companion animals and pets in need of a home.”

All the shelters need to confirm veteran status is their veterans’ driver’s license designation.

According to assistant professor of human-animal interaction at Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine in Indiana – Maggie O’Haire, PhD, having a pet gives significant benefits to the pet owner, in both physical and emotional aspects.

Dr. O’Haire had a speech in the American Veterinary Medical Association Convention that was held in Indianapolis last 2017 explaining that 63% of American households already have a companion animal. Even though the care of an animal can get expensive, it yields more benefits than one can count.

An example of a benefit is the fact that pet give non-judgemental social support for their owners. Companion animals also help in social interactions between other people to expand social networks within a community. Another perfect example is how an animal can help people get dates with fellow furry lovers.

“The research suggests that animals make us look friendlier, happier, more approachable, and less threatening,” she added.
