Every vehicle that weighs 55,000 pounds or more is taxable, and owners of such vehicles must file form 2290 and pay the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT).
You can file form 2290 online or manually. Online filing is considered a more accessible and convenient option than manual filing as it is much faster and hassle-free. If you choose to file online, you must use an IRS authorized e-file service provider.
You can pay your HVUT return online using different payment modes. All of them are discussed in detail below:
Electronic Fund Withdrawal (EFW): You can authorize direct debit of the tax amount from your bank account in this method. For the tax payment, you need to provide two things: the bank account details and the routing number of the bank account.
In this method, your e-file service provider will act as a bridge between you and the IRS. In the EFW method, it will take around 24-48 hours for the payment to get deducted from the bank account.
Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS): It is a free service provided by the U.S. Department of Treasury to pay the HVUT return.
To get yourself enrolled for EFTPS, you will need to provide details such as:
- Employee Identification Number (EIN),
- Bank account and routing details related to the bank,
- Name and address of the business as specified in the IRS tax documents.
The EFTPS service is available on both phone and website 24*7. It also allows you to schedule individual and business payments up to 365 days in advance.
Debit/credit card: It is one of the most commonly used modes of tax payment. After completing form 2290, you can pay your HVUT amount using the credit/debit card option. Upon selecting the option, you will be redirected to the IRS website, where you will make the payment.
Check/money order: It is one of the oldest modes of tax payment. In this mode of payment, you need to send your money order to the United Nations Treasury, along with other details such as your name, EIN, address, and payment date.
Below we list down a few things to keep in mind if you choose to pay through check/money order.
- You cannot send the money directly to the IRS. Instead, you need to detach the voucher and send it along with Form 2290 and both copies of Schedule 1 form 2290.
- You will receive a stamped Schedule 1 copy as soon as the IRS accepts your return. However, if your check/money order doesn’t reach the IRS before the form 2290 deadline, you could face penalties.
- Do not use staple pins or paper clips to affix your 2290-V voucher with your check.
- Don’t send the money order through private courier services; instead, opt for the U.S. postal services.
You can use any of the above-mentioned tax payment modes to pay form 2290. However, ensure that you file form 2290 and pay the HVUT return before the due date to avoid any late-filing charges by the IRS.
