Inmates In Quezon Province, Philippines, Make Face Shields For Frontliners To Use

True Activists

There are many people around the world who are doing their share in trying to help the Coronavirus from spreading. Governments are enforcing quarantine lockdowns and social distancing. Most people are told to stay at home, and lots have stopped working, and some have even lost their jobs. But the “frontliners” are needed — these are the doctors, nurses, health workers, grocery staff, and other essential workers that communities can’t do without.

Definitely Filipino

The Philippines is also suffering from the virus, though not as badly as Italy, the US, UK, and other countries. Citizens are doing their share to help, and not even prisoners behind bars are idle. The inmates, or also known as Persons Deprived of Liberty, in the Quezon Province, are making improvised face shields to protect the frontliners from the virus. According to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), the prisoners thought of doing this to help prevent the spread of the Coronavirus. They realize the health workers are risking their lives to treat patients afflicted with the virus, and wanted to help. Most especially since they all have families outside the prison walls who may be in danger of contracting the virus. Senior Jail Officer 3, Adoracion Abella, who is the assistant warden and a registered nurse, said that the prisoners decided to make the face shields because they heard that health workers needed more as supplies were running out.

50 improvised face shields were created using rubber, garter, scissors, glue gun, glue stick, tape, and gallon containers of water. These crude, but effective masks could be used by the police force, fire fighters, and city officials, aside from the health workers. Assistant warden Abella also said the inmates were elated as it gave them a sense of worth by being able to help out, even if they were behind bars. It really does feel good to be able to help your fellow men. No matter who you are. It seems that other places and provinces are also doing the same, it appears these inmates were able to encourage others to do their share and help out any way they can. While people all over the world are suffering from this pandemic, it is good to know that many are trying to help out. Hopefully the virus will soon enough disappear.
