The captain’s “best guess”
The couple were transported to the ship inside a van with blacked-out windows. They were then sent to the captain’s office where the captain offered his “best guess.” He said that their daughter may have been washed overboard by a wave while she was in the pool on the ship’s front-bow. However, that may be unlikely, since the walls around the bow are high enough to prevent anyone from being swept overboard.
