Man Wins Over Dog’s Trust By Visiting Her In The Shelter For 2 Months

In Austin, a man named Joe Rotunda has developed a deep affection for a dog named Alva, who happens to have wobbler syndrome, a condition that affects her ability to stand and walk. Despite Alva’s challenging circumstances, Rotunda was convinced that they were destined to be companions.

Alva’s journey began at Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) in November 2020 when she was just 5 months old. At that time, she was in poor condition, suffering from fleas, malnourishment, and the difficulties associated with wobbler syndrome. This condition made it challenging for her to maintain a steady balance on her feet.

Over nearly two years of being in shelters and foster care, Alva’s experiences had shaped her into a self-protective, territorial, and shy dog. Despite these challenges, Rotunda, who first noticed Alva on APA’s Instagram, felt a strong calling to intervene and offer her assistance. His determination to help Alva overcame the obstacles posed by her medical condition and the behavioral challenges she had developed through various owner changes.

“I just looked at her and said, ‘I bet everyone has given up on you,’” Rotunda allegedly said to APA! “‘I’m not going to do that to you.’”

He was determined not to give up on Alva. Instead, for a continuous two-month period, he faithfully visited her at the APA, patiently working to earn her trust with the ultimate goal of welcoming her into his home for foster care. Recognizing the potential for improvement in Alva’s situation, the APA staff at the shelter actively collaborated to enhance accommodations for her Parkinson’s-like motor instability and implemented a specialized form of physical therapy.

Persistence paid off, and Rotunda’s wish came true when Alva was finally able to move in with him. This was not only a new chapter for Alva but also a joyous addition to Rotunda’s household, where she found companionship with his other dog. In anticipation of her arrival, Rotunda took proactive measures to transform his home into a secure and accessible environment for Alva. This involved installing various ramps and padding corners, ensuring that she would have a safe and easily maneuverable living space.

“Alva gave me a gift every time I saw her, and that was: inspiration. It is her spirit that is so infectious, she shines, and nothing gets in her way,” Rotunda said when speaking to APA! “She does not know she is different.”
