Melinda French Gates Pledges A Whopping $1B To Support Women’s Rights And Families

Every Woman Every Child Summit

Melinda French Gates has recently made headlines with her announcement to initiate a new chapter in her philanthropic journey by dedicating $1 billion of her personal wealth to support welfare programs aimed at improving the lives of women across the United States and globally.

This significant pledge comes in the wake of her divorce of her decision to step down from her executive position at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. French Gates highlighted in an op-ed  that a mere 2% of charitable donations in the United States are directed toward organizations that focus on women and girls, an alarmingly low figure that she aims to address through her newfound philanthropic efforts.

In her op-ed, French Gates provided a broad outline of the numerous issues that this small percentage of charitable giving seeks to address. These issues include malnourishment, political violence, access to conventional medical assistance, maternal mortality, the use of rape as a weapon of war, depression, the lack of paid family or medical leave, and the availability of reproductive medicine options. These are pressing challenges that disproportionately affect women, and French Gates is determined to bring more attention and resources to combat them.

To this end, French Gates is establishing a new philanthropic fund named Pivotal. Through Pivotal, she plans to more directly support organizations that are actively working to address the myriad hazards facing women. Among the beneficiaries of her generosity will be the National Women’s Law Center, the National Domestic Workers Alliance, and the Center for Reproductive Rights.

These organizations have been at the forefront of advocating for women’s rights and well-being, and French Gates’ support will undoubtedly bolster their efforts.

“Melinda has new ideas about the role she wants to play in improving the lives of women and families in the U.S. and around the world. After a difficult few years watching women’s rights rolled back in the U.S. and around the world, she wants to use this next chapter to focus specifically on altering that trajectory,” said Gates Foundation CEO Mark Suzman.

Suzman’s comments reflect the urgency and importance of French Gates’ mission, particularly in light of recent setbacks in women’s rights both domestically and internationally.

In a manner similar to McKenzie Scott’s approach of distributing her personal fortune to grassroots nonprofits, French Gates intends to allocate $250 million to an initiative set to commence this fall. This initiative will include an “open call” to small organizations that have a direct connection to the communities they serve.

By challenging funds to these grassroots entities, French Gates aims to empower local leaders and advocates who are often best positioned to understand and address the unique needs of their communities.

NPR has reported that an additional $240 million in partnerships will be extended to 12 global female leaders, each receiving a $20 million fund. This impressive lineup of recipient includes notable figures such as former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, athlete and maternal health advocate Allyson Felix, and Afghan educator and women’s rights advocate Shabana Basij-Rasikh.

Each of these leaders will have the opportunity to distribute their funds to organizations that work to improve women’s health both in the United States and internationally. This initiative underscores the importance of supporting female leadership and amplifying the impact of their work on a global scale.

French Gates wrote, “As a young woman, I could never have imagined that one day I would be part of an effort like this. Because I have been given this extraordinary opportunity, I am determined to do everything I can to seize it and to set an agenda that helps other women and girls set theirs, too.”

Her words resonate with a sense of responsibility and commitment to leveraging her resources and influence to create meaningful change for women and girls worldwide.

Melinda French Gates’ new philanthropic endeavors signal a powerful commitment to addressing the systemic issues that hinder women’s progress and well-being. By focusing her efforts on supporting organizations and leaders dedicated to women’s rights and health, French Gates is poised to make a significant impact.

Her initiatives promise to bring much-needed attention and resources to the fight for gender equality, inspiring other philanthropists and leaders to join in the effort to create a more just and equitable world for all women and girls.
