The death toll after a Brazilian mining collapse has reached 110 people, and 238 more people are still missing.

The collapse of the dam took place last January 25 at the Corrego de Feijao mine in the town of Burmadinho. When the tragedy occured, there were 400 employees that were on location having their lunch break or otherwise working nearby the dam. And although, the owners of the mining site – Vale Mining Company said that the dam was equipped with eight sirens in case of an emergency, “the speed in which the event happened made sounding an alarm impossible” when the collapse occurred.

More than 40 people have been rescued alive and half of them needed to be hospitalized. “Most likely, from now on we are mostly going to be recovering bodies,” said Romeu Zema, the governor of the state of Minas Gerais. He also said Saturday afternoon that those responsible “would be punished.” When the dam collapsed, helicopters were used to search for other survivors in the area that was buried by mud.

The dam was built in 1976 to hold off residue coming from the Corrego de Feijao mine. Since Tuesday, Brazilian authorities have already arrested five people who were in any way connected to the collapse. Two of those arrested used to work for the Vale Mining Company, while the three others were employees of a German company that was responsible for the dam’s inspections. The assets amounting to 5 million dollars of the Vale – the biggest mining company in Brazil has also been frozen by the government, as well as a $66.5 million fine from the Environmental Protection Agency.

In 2015, another dam had collapsed killing 19 people and this too, was linked to Vale. This resulted in the worst catastrophe the country has ever experienced.
