Above is the Salstraumen whirlpool in the strait of Nordland County, Norway considered as the largest natural whirlpool in the world. Also called a maelstrom, this rotating current is formed when the tides try to fill the Skierstand Fjord. It is estimated that about 400 million cubic meters of water makes its way through Salstraumen every six hours, forming whirlpools up to 33 feet in diameter and 16 feet deep.
