Fire Devil In California

Fire devils, also known as fire whirls or fire tornadoes, come out of large wildfires when the hot and dry air rises rapidly from the ground, forming a vertical column until it goes higher in the atmosphere and reaches cooler air. The swirling vortex pulls more flames and hot air into this column, making for a violent tower of flames. The gigantic fire tornado pictured above, which wreaked havoc in Redding, California, is said to have reached 18,000 feet into the air and lasted for almost an hour.
