The Lightning Volcano
The Chaiten volcano in the southern part of Chile, which has been dormant for over 9,000 years erupted again for the first time in May 2008, spewing out plumes and lava, and sending lahars and raining ash on the town, with the ashfall also disrupting travel and agriculture in surrounding countries. The picture shows a lightning storm taking place in the middle of the eruption, where the theory is that the positively-charged debris from the eruption that collides with the negative charges brought about the bolts of lightning.
