Netflix Partnered With CA Dispensary To Sell Their Own Strains Of Weed

As part of their effort to promote their new weed-centric show Disjointed, Netflix teamed up with a California dispensary to produce and release their own strains of weed. The names of the strains were inspired by strains and characters found in the show and they were sold exclusively from a pop-up shop in West Hollywood the same weekend that the show was released on Netflix.

Disjointed stars Kathy Bates and is about a middle-aged woman’s journey to opening her own dispensary and hiring her son and other young budtenders to help her. While the concept for the show and the promotional materials sounds great, critics have been less than enthused with the outcome; CNN called the show “as stale as an unwashed bong.”

Among the strains were Rutherford B. Haze, Eve’s Bush, and the Omega Strain, all of which were specifically from Disjointed. Netflix also created and sold strains inspired by other original shows on the streaming site, like Orange is the New Black and Bojack Horseman.

“Each strain was cultivated with the specific shows in mind, designed to complement each title based on their tone,” Netflix said in a release. “For example, sillier shows may be more indica dominant, while dramedies will be more sativa dominant to help the more powerful scenes resonate.”

If you’re unfamiliar with these terms, sativa and indica are two distinct strains of marijuana that produce different highs for the user. Sativa typically produce a rush of energy and a mind-high that leaves the user feeling uplifted and energized, while indica leaves users feeling relaxed, sedated, and mellower.

This move comes at a time when California continues to embrace marijuana and the federal government continues to resist reform. U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has repeatedly said that he intends to push back against reform measures put forth by states. Despite the actions of the government, Netflix clearly thought the substance was popular enough to use as a promotional agent for their show. They made it clear, however, that they would collect no profit from the selling of strains because it was strictly for promotional purposes.

Unfortunately, the strains were only sold for that weekend through Alternative Herbal Health Services dispensary, but that doesn’t mean you should write off the whole promotion. Watch the Disjointed trailer below to see if the show is up your alley.
