This week it was reported that the Sarasota County School Board will pay out $200,000 to three separate families because their children had died after being hypnotized by North Port High School Principal George Kenney.
The Settlement was the result of a lawsuit that was filed by the families of the deceased children. Two of the students killed themselves just after their hypnosis, and one died in a car accident under suspicious circumstances. All of the deaths occurred within the year of 2011.
After the deaths occurred an investigation into George Kenney’s hypnosis sessions uncovered that he regularly hypnotized students, putting over 70 of them in the highly suggestive state. Kenny claimed that he hypnotized the students mostly to help them overcome test anxiety and improve athletic performance.
During the investigation, Kenny admitted to hypnotizing one of the students on the same day that he committed suicide. In June of 2012, he pleaded no contest to practicing therapeutic hypnosis without a license and was sentenced to a year of probation. He has since resigned and has not been seen or heard from since.
“I’m not saying I used great judgment all the time here. I think I used poor judgment several times,” Kenny admitted during the investigation. Sadly, on Wednesday, we reported that a student in Ohio killed himself after he was berated by school staff and police because he showed up to a school dance smelling like marijuana.
