One of the worst fears parents might have is waking up one morning to find their kids missing. That’s exactly how Marlene and Thomas Woracek woke up one freezing January day in 1997. Their three-year-old twin daughters, Jennifer and Kourtney, were nowhere to be found inside the house. Officers searching for the kids were in a race against time, as temperatures outside posed serious threats to the lives of the little girls.

An ordinary Omaha family
Our story takes us back to January 1997 in Omaha, Nebraska, where Thomas and Marlene Woracek were raising an average, young family. They had three daughters, two of whom are twins. Lindsay at the time was in fifth grade, and Jennifer and Kourtney were three years old. They lived in a house just a mile away from the city’s business district.
