To help alleviate anxiety and create a conducive environment for learning, several elementary schools in Michigan have enlisted service dogs are full-time happiness ambassadors. As reported by WXMI-TV 17, students are “already seeing a big difference in their academics.”
Priority Health, a Michigan-based health insurance provider, initiated the Priority Pups programs in September. Goldendoodles were introduced into two school districts in Michigan, “with more to come,” meaning they have plans to expand to more schools in the future.
One of the students at North Godwin Elementary School, Shelby, expressed her affection for the service dog, Meeka, saying, “I love you, Meeka.” In addition, Meeka spends time in different classrooms daily, providing comfort and support to the students.
Research indicates that trained dogs can significantly reduce children’s stress levels, promote a positive attitude toward learning, and improve peer interactions.
A 2023 report from Mental Health America (MHA) highlighted that a significant number of young people in Michigan suffering from clinical depression did not receive any mental health treatment.
Shelby’s mother, Laurie Uhl, shared the transformative impact Meeka has had on her daughter’s life. She shares, “Shelby was diagnosed with a genetic disorder called Fragile X Syndrome, along with autism and ADHD. Here at school, she really struggles with a range of emotions.”
“She gets angry and will cry or scream uncontrollably,” she adds.
However, Meeka’s presence has provided a reliable method to calm Shelby during these episodes.

Laurie noted, “I’ve seen Shelby having a meltdown, and when Meeka is brought into the room, I can see a breath of fresh air wash over her and she finds comfort.”
The benefits of having service dogs extend beyond helping students manage stress. Studies have shown that literacy scores improve when children read to dogs.
One fifth-grader shared with MXMI-TV, “My math was super hard, but when Meeka came in and when I take a break with her for a few minutes, math became really easy.”
This innovative program was made possible through the efforts of Canines for Change, an organization founded in 2005 by Dr. Nikki Brown, a school psychologist in the Lansing School District in Michigan.

Dr. Brown initially brought her adorable Corgi to work with special education students and observed significant improvements in their skills and behavior due to the dog’s presence. This success led her to collaborate with another trainer to provide service dogs for children with special needs.
Three years ago, Canines for Change was approached by the Grand Ledge School District to place a Facility Dog in each of their nine school buildings. Recognizing the potential benefits, Priority Health decided to support and fund their own program, Priority Pups, to extend this positive impact to more schools.
The implementation of service dogs in schools has proven to be a beneficial strategy for enhancing students’ emotional well-being and academic performance. With ongoing support from organizations likes Priority Health and Canines for Change, the program is poised to expand, bringing comfort and improved learning experiences to even more student across Michigan.
The presence of these service dogs not only provides emotional support but also fosters a positive and engaging learning environment, demonstrating the profound impact that animals can have on human well-being and education.
