Signs of Inconsistency

The police questioned eyewitnesses, friends, and relatives just to finally get to the bottom of the case. When they interviewed Ian Huntley, he told them that he actually saw the girls on their way to the candy store. He was a familiar face to both Holly and Jessica. He spoke on TV and seemed as shocked as everyone else with what happened. He was weeping and said that he may have been the last person to speak to them. He also expressed his regret not talking to the girls longer because he believed that this could have saved them.
False alibi

Since the cops were trying to piece details together and collect alibis, Huntley’s girlfriend, Maxine Carr, provided one for him during the investigation. She told them that she was with him at home and can therefore vouch for him the night Holly and Jessica disappeared. She was a teaching assistant at the girls’ school and was close to the both of them. In fact, she got a note from Holly saying that Carr will be missed once she stopped working for the school.
