Real Madrid’s iconic Santiago Bernabeu stadium, revered as a cathedral of soccer, has recently unveiled its state-of-the-art renovations, featuring groundbreaking technological advancements that have set a new standard in stadium design. Among these innovations is a retractable roof and, in a surprising feat of engineering, a retractable field.
Indeed, the entire natural grass pitch can be moved using segmented, hydraulic-powered platforms, transferring it to shelves in an underground greenhouse located four stories beneath the stadium. This unique feature allows the pitch to be maintained in optimal conditions, bathed in UV growing lights for 14 hours daily and routinely watered, ensuring it remains in perfect condition until game day.
The renovation of the Santiago Bernabeu began in 2017 and took five active years to complete, with a total cost of €1.17 billion. This was nearly double the original estimate, primarily due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine. Despite these challenges, the end result is a stadium that can be used year-round, regardless of weather conditions, thanks to its new fixed roof spanning 28,000 m² and a retractable roof of 8,000 m².
The retractable pitch was initially revealed to fans in a playful manner, with the club posting images on social media of the stadium without its famous pitch, showing a massive hole in the floor instead. This innovative design not only preserves the quality of the grass but also maximizes efficiency by reducing water consumption and protecting the pitch from drying out under the sun.
Inside the underground greenhouse, advanced systems for ventilation, climate control, lighting, monitoring, and irrigation ensure the turf is kept in pristine condition. This setup allows for continuous maintenance without interfering with other events held at the stadium, showcasing an impressive blend of efficiency and technological prowess.
A remarkable aspect of this system is that it was developed entirely within the stadium’s existing footprint, without requiring any additional external space. This makes it a unique engineering marvel, unparalleled in the world of sports stadiums.

Adding to the technological advancements, the stadium now features a new 360° LCD screen suspended from the roof. This screen, a first of its kind in a European stadium, displays multiple content zones simultaneously. It provides fans with live video, instant replays, statistics, graphics, animations, and sponsorship messages, all in an unbroken ring around the stadium, enhancing the spectator experience significantly.
The renovation also increased the stadium’s capacity to 85,000, ensuring it remains one of the largest and most iconic venues in the world. The updated infrastructure includes a full suite of accessibility options, with seating and facilities designed to accommodate disabled fans, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the matches in sheer comfort.
These extensive renovations have transformed the Santiago Bernabeu into a futuristic arena, blending cutting-edge technology with the historic legacy of one of football’s most storied clubs. Real Madrid’s commitment to innovation and excellence is clearly reflected in this monumental project, which not only enhances the matchday experience for fans but also sets a new benchmark for stadium design globally.
