A groundbreaking invention by a team of South Korean student inventors has secured the prestigious 2023 James Dyson Award. Their creation, The Golden Capsule, is an air pressure-controlled IV bag that promises to revolutionize the administration of life-saving fluids and drugs in disaster situations.

Inspired by the devastating Turkish-Syrian earthquakes in February 2023, which left over 55,000 casualties and 100,000 injured, the team from Hongik University School in Seoul aimed to address the challenges faced by medics during evacuations.

In the aftermath of the earthquakes, medics found themselves navigating through harsh environments while juggling multiple IV packs for their patients. Recognizing the need for a more efficient and hands-free solution, the South Korean team set out to design The Golden Capsule.

This innovative IV device relies on elastic forces and air pressure differences, eliminating the need for gravity or external power sources. The result is a device that allows medics in disaster zones to transport patients without the cumbersome task of holding up IV packs and without requiring electricity to control the infusion rate.

Sir James Dyson, Founder and Chief Engineer at Dyson, shared, “The team has identified the limitations of existing IV injection methods, which rely on gravity and electricity, in disaster zones. Their Golden Capsule offers a much more practical, hands-free solution, using a pressurized bladder, which can be positioned anywhere, such as strapped to the patient’s side.”

“This slowly deflates, pressurizing the drip into the patient, leaving medics free to perform other life-saving work,” he added.

“It became evident that the existing IV setups became highly impractical,” said one of the students in a video, who added she first had the idea when she herself had been hospitalized and found it really inconvenient to move around with an IV,” he said.

The Golden Capsule’s non-powered and hands-free design marks a significant advancement in emergency medical care. Not only does it enhance the flexibility of rescuers, but it also ensures that critical fluids and drugs can be administered without the constraints of traditional IV systems. The implications for disaster response are immense, as medics can now focus more on the immediate needs of patients rather than struggling with the logistics of IV administration.

The team’s dedication to improving the prototype and conducting rigorous user tests in collaboration with medical experts highlights their commitment to ensuring The Golden Capsule’s functionality in various emergency scenarios and hospital settings. This thorough approach speaks to the device’s potential to address diverse challenges faced by healthcare professionals in the field. By incorporating feedback from experts and real-world testing, the team aims to fine-tune their invention and pave the way for its widespread adoption.
