Telecom Cabinets Converted To EV Charging Station To Be Set Up All Across Britain

British telecom giant BT Group is transforming curbside cable boxes into electric car charging stations, aiming to help Great Britain accelerate its transition to a net-zero emissions economy.

Many of BT’s existing curbside cabinets, which have become obsolete due to the shift to wireless telephone and cable provision, are finding a new purpose. These cabinets, known as DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer) boxes, have the capability to charge an electric vehicle (EV) in about 6 to 8 hours using the electricity lines already supplying them.

Each DSLAM box receives 7.4 kilowatt-hours to provide various telecom services, meaning no additional power lines need to be installed for the charging stations. This eliminates the need for digging up existing infrastructure, making the conversion process both efficient and cost-effective.

The first of these conversions has already been completed in East Lothian, Scotland. BT Group envisions using a payment application over the phone or via contactless payment hardware for these stations, although specific pricing details have yet to be released.


With over 60,000 DSLAM boxes across the UK, BT Group sees this initiative as an excellent opportunity to “repurpose existing street furniture.” This effort is part of a broader strategy to address one of the primary concerns of potential EV drivers: the availability of charging stations.

Currently, there are about 54,000 charging stations in the UK. However, range anxiety remains a significant barrier to EV adoption, with many drivers fearing they won’t find a charging station along their route. To alleviate this concern, the UK government aims to encourage or finance the construction of 300,000 charging stations by 2030.

BT’s plan to retrofit as many as 600 DSLAM cabinets by the end of the year is a significant step toward this goal. This initiative not only leverages existing infrastructure but also contributes to the national push for a more sustainable transportation system.

The conversion of DSLAM boxes into EV charging stations represents a smart use of existing resources. By reusing the electrical infrastructure already in place, BT Group is helping to pave the way for a greener future without the extensive costs and disruptions associated with building new facilities from scratch.
