David Carpenter had an above average IQ score of 125, and though not considered highly intelligent, he was cunning enough to be initially suspected to be the Zodiac Killer. Known as “The Trailside Killer,” San Francisco native Carpenter is responsible for at least seven murders between 1979 and 1981, but has already spent time in prison for previous crimes ranging from robbery, to kidnapping, to attempted murder. When he was finally arrested, he was convicted of raping and killing five women and was given the death sentence. However, subsequent investigations have resulted to him being convicted of two other murders, and suspected of two more. He remains on death row and is presently incarcerated at the San Quentin State Prison in Marin County.
