Mexico native Juan Vallejo Corona first entered the U.S. illegally in 1950, marrying and settling in Yuba City. In 1956, he was diagnosed with schizophrenia, and upon release from the DeWitt State Hospital, was deported back to Mexico. Having an IQ of 130, he would return legally and establish himself as a labor contractor. His killing spree started in 1970, and he claimed at least 25 victims, mostly migrant farm workers, who he buried in ranches. His victims mostly bore stab and hack wounds, which earned him the nickname “The Machete Murderer.” He was given a life sentence when he got caught, and his defense tried to pin the murders to his gay brother who had a history of attacking a lover with a machete. He was denied parole several times and died in March 2019.
