Rodney Alcala may not be the most notorious, but he certainly is one of the smartest. With an IQ that is said to be between 167 – 170, Alcala even represented himself during his own trial, and almost got away with it. His five victims were all young women, with the youngest aged 12, but was suspected of killing many more. He’s known as the “The Dating Game Serial Killer” for joining, and winning, the TV show, The Dating Game, at the time of his killings between 1977 to 1979. He also wrote and self-published a book, You, the Jury, while serving time. During his trial, he cross-examined himself and actually managed to pull off some technicalities which could have taken him off the hook, but with the introduction of DNA evidence, he was eventually found guilty and sentenced to death. He is currently locked up at the California State Prison in Corcoran.
