Her Story
Oprah never hid the fact that she was born into poverty in rural Mississippi to a teenage single mother. Neither did she hide the painful fact that she was molested during childhood and early teens, becoming pregnant at a young age of 14. She gave birth to a son who was born prematurely and perished during infancy. She was then sent to live with the man she calls her father, a barber in Tennessee by the name of Vernon Winfrey. She got a job in radio while still in high school. By 19, she was co-anchor for the local evening news. Because of her style and delivery, being emotionally packed and most of the time done extemporaneously, she transferred to the daytime talk show platform, and after boosting a third-rated Chicago talk show to top spot, she launched her own production company, and was internationally syndicated.
