Although he was born into a wealthy Muslim family, Dangote remembers buying cartons of sweets and selling them during primary school. “ I was so interested in business, even at that time,” he explains. The Dangote Group was a small trading firm established in 1977. It has since expanded into manufacturing cement, flour and refining sugar. It also dominates the sugar market and is a major supplier of Nigeria’s breweries, soft drink companies, and confectioners.
