On September 21st, 2014, a group of hikers was enjoying a day out in West Milford, New Jersey when a 300-pound black bear approached them. The bear, vicious and hungry, stalked the 5 hikers until they were forced to split up and run in opposite directions.

The bear wound up gaining on 22-year-old Darsh Patel and mauling him to death. This photo was recovered on Patel’s phone, which was found with his remains and had a puncture mark from the bear’s tooth. Patel was last seen climbing a rock formation after he lost a shoe, telling his friends to continue on without him.
