For a unique experience, why not tour Eastern State Penitentiary? A visit is an essential Philadelphia experience. It was operated from 1829 to 1971 and kept some famous criminals including Al Capone and Willie Sutton. The prison emphasized on rehabilitation over punishment and its wagon wheel design was way ahead of its time and considered innovative to this day. The prison hosts the annual Terror Behind the Walls, a scary and interactive haunted house exhibit the runs for more than a month during Halloween.
