This Hostel In Jamaica Is Giving Away Free Joints In Exchange For Buckets Of Trash

This hostel is not only saving the world, but they’re also spreading the love at the same time by giving away joints. This can also happen to you if you travel to Jamaica and stay in the German hostel Germaican. For every bucket of trash their guests get to collect in the beach, the hostel will give you a fat joint in exchange for cleaning their shores.

International High Life reported that in July 2018, one of the posts made by the hostel went viral. They advertised that they are giving away joints to everybody that gives them a bucket of garbage. Of course, pot-lovers quickly took up that offer.

This cool exchange of goods was started by Marian Erbach, a 33-year-old from Germany but now living in Jamaica. He was so upset with the massive amount of garbage in their area, mostly plastic waste – so he came up with a plan to trade joints for trash.

After advertising his idea, Erbach rolled 56 joints that totalled 56 grams of weed. He didn’t roll more than this because under the Jamaican law, one person is legally allowed to carry up to a maximum of 56 grams of marijuana without being arrested.  The most that could happen is him being fined.

Without big surprise, his idea worked like a charm. More cannabis lovers and guests went to his hostel to pick up trash and trade it for free joints. More importantly, the nearby beaches are way cleaner.

As reported by EcoWatch, over 80% of trash that is initially thrown in landfills all end up floating in the ocean. Most of the garbage either washes ashore or stays in giant garbage patches like the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. If they are left there for a long time, they will eventually break apart into micro-particles and kill the animals who end up ingesting these particles, as well as spread toxins to the ocean.

Would you stay at this hostel?
