This Minnesota Cat Sanctuary Reveals Its New Outdoor Playground For Once Feral Rescues

Furball Farm

A cat sanctuary in Minnesota named Furball Farm truly lives up to its mission, which is ‘providing a place of refuge for cats in hopeless situations.’

Located in the city of Faribault, the cat shelter invited volunteers to help their staff build an extraordinary outdoor cat shelter to be a haven for dozens of feral rescues. The idea is to provide these furry felines with  the opportunity to play, learn, and gradually adapt to human interaction.

Initially, many of the cats at Furball Farm was unapproachable and untouchable, as reported by CBS. However, through the tireless efforts of the compassionate team, a significant majority of these once-elusive felines have now developed a love for human visitors.

The brainchild behind this initiative is Julie Maverts, who founded the farm in her garage six years ago. Recognizing that the outdoors is where most feral cats have grown up, Julie emphasizes the importance of allowing them to experience the wonders of nature, including the wind, sun, and birdsong, coupled with the essential ingredients of love, gentleness, and affection. This holistic approach to rehabilitation has proven to be highly effective in bridging the gap between feral instincts and domestic companionship.

“We will only accept cats from clinics/rescues/impound/humane societies that are deemed unadoptable due to behavior,” the site states.

Over the years, Julie has opened her heart and home to hundreds of strays, facilitating their adoption into loving families. Generous donations enable Furball Farm to provide low-cost spaying and neutering services, along with essential treatments for fleas and worms. This commitment to affordable healthcare ensures the well-being of the feline residents and contributes to controlling the population of stray cats in the community.

Furball Farm welcomes visitors between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., providing an opportunity for individuals to witness firsthand the positive impact of this unique outdoor shelter. The cleanliness and tidiness of the area are maintained by a dedicated force of volunteers, ranging from those who contribute just two hours to others who generously offer twenty hours of their time. Their collective efforts create a nurturing environment for the cats to thrive and form meaningful connections with humans.

“People care about them. They’re not just nuisance cats trying to struggle outside. These guys can enjoy the weather and then go in when they’re cold. When they’re hungry, they can go in and get food. I think they’re gonna be a lot happier because they’re in their natural environment. Yes, they can’t actually leave this area but it’s home,” Maverts said.

The shelter’s design caters to the diverse needs and preferences of its residents. For cats experiencing the infamous “zoomies,” expansive spaces and lush grass offer the perfect setting for energetic play.

Meanwhile, vertically-inclined felines find joy in climbing lattices and exploring overhanging catwalks. The thoughtfully designed space ensures that every cat, regardless of their personality or playstyle, can find solace and enjoyment in their surroundings.

Although the video showcasing the heartwarming stories within Furball Farm cannot be embedded here, those that would like to watch it can see it on the shelter’s Facebook page.

Furball Farm stands as a beacon of hope for feral cats, providing them with a second chance at a loving and secure home. Julie Maverts and her team have created a sanctuary where nature and nurture work hand in hand to heal and transform the lives of these once-elusive creatures, fostering a community where humans and felines coexist harmoniously.
