Mobile phone

This one absolutely tops my list as years ago I would find myself travelling with a mobile phone for communications, a laptop for keeping on top of emails and any online activity I need to do, a camera for recording memories of my trip, plus numerous other devices and accessories. Modern day smartphones make all of the above redundant. The camera is more than good enough, I have access to emails and any communications I need as well as having a device to monitor my location and also maps in case I need to find my way. You can even find an app to translate so the days of struggling to communicate with locals is a thing of the past.

Top Tips!

Portable Charger

This one is essential, as you will likely be reliant on your one device to ensure the battery is fully charged at all times is a must. I find using a portable charger which can hold enough power for 3 charges usually gets me through until I can find a power supply.

Padlock

If you are travelling through hostels you will absolutely need a lock to keep your belongings secure. Choosing a combination lock is a great idea as losing the key to your padlock can result in your losing our items, having to pay for damages to the locker (retrieving your items) and renders your lock useless, leaving you without a security measure for the remainder of your trip or until you find a replacement. So, think ahead when making the purchase as you want secure and easy to use.

Universal Adaptor

Again, this one is essential if you are travelling with electronic devices, which with all things considered I can say you will be. If you are visiting a number of locations a multi-adapter with different fittings will prove invaluable as you will only need 2 for your entire trip. Just make sure ts packed away after each use!

Clothing

You will need clothing to suit all occasions whilst you are away as you cannot predict the weather. I always ensure to take plenty of underwear, waterproof jacket, waterproof shoes, and waterproof trousers, as getting soaked through when you are living out of a bag can dampen the trip, literally. I make sure to take my personalised hoodie that I got from Banana Moon on every trip I go on, it’s kind of my travel jumper. It is definitely old and definitely looking warn but the sentimental value appreciates with every trip I make.

Lightweight Backpack

If you plan on making smaller trips, such as hiking or other excursions whilst you are travelling, a lightweight backpack is a must as you can leave the bulk of your belongings safely locked away in your hostel as you take in the local scenery.

Toiletries

Travelling halfway around the world to realise you have forgotten your toothbrush is not the best way to start your trip! Take the essentials and make sure you have enough, as you could find yourself somewhere where certain items are unavailable, or you may be somewhere remote where finding a shop becomes an impossible task.
