According to Putin’s opposition and journalists, he secretly owns a multi-billion fortune through his stakes in several Russian companies. In 2007, Putin’s wealth amounted to 3.7 million rubles (US$150,000) in bank accounts, an 833 sq ft apartment in Saint Petersburg in addition to various other assets. In 2012, Putin’s income was 3.6 million rubles ($113,000). However, leaked evidence has suggested that most of his wealth is hidden overseas.

In April 2016, 11-million documents belonging to Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca were leaked to the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung as well as the Washington-based International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. This trove of documents has been considered the biggest financial leak in history. Putin’s best friend Sergei Roldugin is at the heart of the scandal. The documents suggest that Roldugin has been funneling over $100 million to Putin’s inner circle.
