US State Dept. Press Secretary Calls Her Own Statement Ridiculous On Hot Mic (@2:03)

gov press secDuring a press conference this week, US State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki was caught on a hot mic calling her own prepared statement ridiculous.

Responding to a question about the recent acquittal of former Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak, Psaki said that:

“Generally, we continue to believe that upholding impartial standards of accountability will advance the political consensus on which Egypt’s long-term stability and economic growth depends, but beyond that I would refer you to the Egyptian government.

It was obvious that she was reading from a prepared script, because she was staring down at a sheet of paper and tripping over her words.

Her statement was even blasted and ridiculed by mainstream reporters with White House press passes, one of whom sarcastically asked, “What does that even mean?” Another reporter chimed in and said, “It sounds like it means nothing!”

Psaki quickly stopped taking questions about Egypt and the press conference came to an abrupt end. After the lights had been dimmed and everyone began to exit the room Psaki said to her handlers “That Egypt line IS ridiculous.”

Every time that a press conference is held, these people are well aware that they are saying ridiculous things that don’t make any sense, but it is funny to watch them actually admit it when they don’t realize that anyone else is listening.
